Today is March 4th, the only day of the year that’s a sentence. I’ve often said there should be a military parade on March 4th, partly because it would be awesome but mostly because it’s my birthday, which means it will eventually be a holiday anyway so why not start now? Also, I’m apparently very arrogant. I prefer to think of it as “strong self esteem.”
In the wonderful year of 2010, March 4th is also the date my second book, Mr. Monster, launches in the UK. Huzzah! My editor celebrated by sending me the “Ultimate Bacon Lover’s Collection,” which includes six flavors of bacon salt, a delicious jar of baconnaise, and (I kid you not) a tube of bacon-flavored lip balm. I used to think I was a bacon fan, until the Internet got wind of the claim and set out to show me what a real bacon fan looks like: a real bacon fan uses bacon-flavored lip balm, bacon-flavored dental floss, and a bacon-scented air freshener. I’m just a guy who thinks pigs are yummy.
But that’s the beside the point, which is that Mr. Monster is finally out! I’m giddy. If you’re in the UK, WH Smith’s has a ton of copies; if you’re elsewhere, Book Depository is the master of free overseas shipping.

Happy Release Day Dan! The physical copy of the book looks great!
I suppose we should review it at EBR eh?
And as a side note, neither Avatar nor The Hurt Locker should win the Best Picture Award. Seriously, people say Avatar’s story is crappy, and they like the story of The Hurt Locker? Really? The Hurt Locker failed on all levels, most of which is failing to live up to the the promise is gives in the opening scene, and also in inconsistent and flawed character progression. /rant
If nothing else, give it to District 9 or Up in the Air…
Happy birthday, it’s mine as well. Small world! Congrats on your release day, hope it goes great.
Many congratulations, Dan! I see from my Utah Children’s Writers email that you’re presenting a workshop on Story Pacing and Structure soon–if I lived in Utah I would totally come. Again, congratulations and best of luck!
DAN!!!!
In celebration of the release of Mr. Monster, I finished reading my copy at 3:45 AM. Yes I know. What was I thinking picking up a book at midnight that I knew would have a point of no return? Anyway, Happy Birthday, Congrats on the release and here is what I think of your second book: “Nice shirt, Dan.”
Seriously, it was graphic, violent, horrific, dark, and I had no idea how I was ever going to close my eyes again…until the last sentence. The last sentence made all of the torturous page turning worth every second.
Can’t wait for the next one (which is saying a lot because at about 3:40 AM this morning, I was ready to burn the book and possibly a Dan ephigy as well just because of all the pain and mental torment you put me through.) You are sooo lucky that the last line redeemed you. Fantastic resolution. I’ll refrain from sending you bacon to show my gratitude.
Happy release day!
I am, quite thankfully, already five chapters into the book and absolutely loving it. I’m trying to pace myself so it’s not over too soon. On to the next!
Did your blog eat my post? I swear that I posted this afternoon about reading Mr. Monster and finishing in the middle of the night. Oh well.
Congrats and happy birthday!!
Donna, I think the first one went to moderation because the name was different. Or maybe it was a different IP address? Anyway, it’s up now.
Also: I’m glad you liked the book. It warms my heart to know how much you enjoyed the horrifying pain the book put you through.
Haha!
Donna, I’m shocked that you braved it. Bravo!
Dan, I posted a short review on inkingcap.blogspot.com a couple of days ago. Happy touring!
Cool, Arlene, thanks for the good review. I regret that I’m not going to make it to Reno on this tour, but I will be in Sacramento–it’s not super close, but it’s closer than Orem.
Congratulations! And happy birthday! What a fortuitous conjoining. I would say this calls for a fine dinner and a heart pat on the back.
Awesome! Sounds like a great excuse to get out of town.
